2013 MFA Thesis Exhibition

Sweeney Art Gallery

April 13 - May 4, 2013

Reception - Saturday, April 13, 2013, 6pm - 9pm

UCR ARTSblock's Sweeney Art Gallery & Culver Center of the Arts present the annual "MFA Thesis Exhibition 2013" with works by five graduating Master of Fine Arts students in UCR's Department of Art: Gabriel Arroyo (drawing and painting), Rachel Bank (video and sculpture), Nick Lowe (video/animation), Justin Lubliner (photography) and Carter Seddon (photography).

Gabriel Arroyo applies techniques of extraction, collage and abstraction to gestural mark making in his series of drawings on photo paper. Rachel Bank explores abstract images with sculptural objects and digital projections. Justin Lubliner negotiates the subjects in his photographs between performance, documentation, fact and fiction. Influenced by the use of repetition in his drawings, Nick Lowe applies stop-motion animation to explore line, form and color. Carter Seddon's photographs are informed by places and subjective relationships to common objects.

These students join the ranks of Master of Fine Arts graduates from art departments and art schools across Southern California, a region that has become known for transforming its art students into major players on the international art scene. UCR's thesis exhibition is distinctive because it is the only graduate student exhibition in Southern California presented in an off-campus, public setting. "Raising the bar of professionalism through public presentations not only assists students in their future careers, but also exemplifies the value UC Riverside places on the unique role of art in linking campus and community," said Tyler Stallings, Artistic Director of the Culver Center of the Arts and Director of the Sweeney Art Gallery. The distinguished full-time faculty in UCR's Art Department includes department chair Amir Zaki, Charles Long, John Divola, Jill Giegerich, Jim Isermann, Brandon Lattu, and Erika Suderburg.

The exhibition is organized by UCR Department of Art and UCR ARTSblock. For more information on the exhibition, visit artsblock.ucr.edu. Support is provided by University of California, Riverside?s Department of Art and College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS).
