Artificial Collections: Photographic Portfolios of the 70s and 80s explores some of the portfolios housed in the permanent collection at UCR/CMP. This selection by UC Riverside lecturer Anthony Pearson, is an intriguing look at a format, which was extremely popular at the time of production. Most of these portfolios were issued in very small editions, made exclusively in many cases for only the participating artists themselves. Bound and presented in distinctive boxes the portfolios act as time capsules to an era where photographic production was intimate and personal by nature. The structure of the portfolio\'s themselves act as a distinct way of marking a concern or a grouping of individual practitioners. They often read as exhibitions or movements in the format of a contained box.
