Women by Women

Photographs from the Permanent Collection

California Museum of Photography

August 23, 2006 - August 27, 2007

The photographers featured within this exhibit are significant female photographers and photojournalists of the twentieth century. Imagery of women have been significant to each of these artists' photographic careers; these are examples of their portraits of women from UCR/CMP's permanent collection. Because these photographers are women, they have a more intimate access into the personal lives of these women: seeing them shortly after plastic surgery, a husband's death, or while bathing in jail, for example. Collectively, the photographs portray individual perspectives toward identity and their sense of womanhood; as a result, the emotions evoked by each photograph are congruent yet distinctly personal.
