Wood, Metal, Plastic

Japanese Artists from the Permanent Collection

Sweeney Art Gallery

October 25 - December 20, 2008

Opening Reception

Saturday, October 25, 2008, 7pm - 10pm

Toshio Odate and Takashi Murakami are highlighted in this selection from the permanent collection because their approach to materials is in dialogue with the main gallery exhibition, Like Lifelike: Painting in the Third Dimension.

In this exhibition guest curator Brad Spence presents eight artists who stretch the boundaries of the traditional two-dimensional surface associated with painting. Likewise, Odate challenges the visual definition of a material, such as wood, that is usually not associated with a liquid state. In a vein to many of the artists in Like Lifelike, Murakami is an artist who works in various media simultaneously, ranging from sculptures, to paintings, to fashion accessories. However, his aesthetic is always based in the super-saturated colors and flatness of both Japanese woodblock prints and present-day animated cartoons.
