Penelope Umbrico’s images offer reinterpretations of everyday consumer and vernacular images. In conjunction with her solo exhibition at the California Museum of Photography, Master, Mountain, Range (and Rangers), on view from August 29 through November 28, Umbrico captures moments from the pages of consumer product, mail order catalogs, travel and leisure brochures; and websites like Craigslist, EBay, and Flickr.
Penelope Umbrico graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, and received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York. She has participated extensively in solo and group exhibitions, including at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and PS1 Contemporary Art Center, New York. Selected public collections include the Guggenheim Museum (NY), International Center of Photography (NY), McNay Museum of Art (TX), Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), Museum of Contemporary Photography (IL), Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (CA), Museum of Modern Art (NY), and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (CA), among others. The Culver Center Digital Mural Project 2015-2016 series is curated by Jennifer Frias, Curator, Culver Center of the Arts + Sweeney Art Gallery. The Culver Center Digital Mural Project at UCR ARTSblock's Culver Center of the Arts presents a series of changing projects on the two screens inside the façade's glass kiosks that face the pedestrian mall. These projects are an opportunity to extend ARTSblock programming into the public space. CMP Projects: Penelope Umbrico: Master, Mountain, Range (and Rangers) is curated by Joanna Szupinska-Myers, CMP Curator of Exhibitions. CMP Projects is an ongoing exhibition series that features photo-based work by contemporary artists. Both series are supported by UCR’s College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS) and the City of Riverside.
